The European Semiconductor Atlas
I decided to do the atlas as a standing data product. It exists because the datasets Europe's chip debate runs on are either paywalled, stale, or assembled by the people selling a conclusion and because I needed the numbers myself and got carried away.
What the atlas contains today:
Wafer fabs 125 fabs across 99 campuses in the EU-27 plus the UK, Switzerland and Norway, from Intel Leixlip down to 20-person pilot lines. Every record carries process, status, capex and sources; since July 2026 also ultimate ownership (who actually controls each fab, down to jurisdiction), documented public subsidies (€15.4bn of approved aid, with Commission case numbers where they exist), and production capacity where — and only where — the operator has published a number. Back-end: 44 sites. Assembly, test and packaging: the layer everyone forgets and Europe barely has. One large merchant OSAT on the entire continent. Zero operational interposer-class advanced-packaging production; one announced.
Equipment: 86 manufacturing and R&D sites. The machines Europe builds for the world's fabs, from Veldhoven's EUV monopoly to two RF-generator plants outside Warsaw — including the four sites nobody else on Earth can replace.
Every fact carries its source, per field, and a date stating when it was checked. Gaps stay visible: where a number is undisclosed, disputed or its source unreachable, the record says so instead of estimating. And the data is CC BY; the raw GeoJSON and CSV can be downloaded.
I plan to update the atlas quarterly. Each update should get a changelog post in this section: what was announced, what broke ground, what quietly died since the last snapshot.
